Harp Sonata: Movement I, II, III

This is a 3 movement harp sonata written between January 2012 and March 2012. Movement I 'Translucent Realities' was originally inspired by E. M. Forster's novels and the idea of reality. Movement II 'Transience' simply is developed from the first movement which leads to Movement III 'Fragment' as a fast paced, broken tempo conclusion.

'Paradise Lost': Prologue

After reading 'Paradise Lost' by Milton as part of my university course, I became inspired by the characters and driven desire in the poem. Here's a small musical interpretation of the beginning of the poem as I feel it. I plan on developing this in the future.

6am

Video pending. 6am is my newest composition so named because it was written as I watched the sun rise from my flat window in Glasgow. I thought I would try and write something a little different in a major key with time changes. Composed April 2013. Photo: Richard Stevens.

Mountain Music Mov. I

This was originally written as the mountain theme for the indie game 'Haven' (created by William Taylor). A few months later I felt inspired to expand it and it now consists of three movements. Composed August 2012.  Photos: Richard Stevens.

Mountain Music Mov. II

Video pending. This is the second movement in  my Mountain Music piece. Composed December 2012. Photo: Richard Stevens.

Mountain Music Mov. III

Video pending. This is the third movement of my Mountain Music piece. Composed January 2013. Photo: Rebecca Stevens.

The Spanish Steps

In 2011 I went on a holiday to Italy with my family and I fell in love with the country. Having heard many classical guitars on the streets of Verona and Venice I decided I would give writing a duet for guitars a go and the tune is named after the Spanish Steps in Rome. I do not play the guitar but I have tried although I gave up in dismay when I realised my hands were too small. The following year I travelled to Rome with friends and actually got to see the Spanish Steps and I'm dreaming of the day I can go back and see the country again. Composed August 2011.

Piano Postcards

My composition teacher set me a brief to write short piano pieces which should be no longer than roughly twenty seconds and would fit on a postcard. This made me think about places where you would not normally find postcards (the exception to this would be Margate and possibly Kielder) and I decided to represent my thoughts on these places through my music. Raploch, Causewayhead and Coalsnaughton are local places near where I live. Composed between June 2011 and October 2011 and were shortlisted in the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composer of the Year competition 2012.

Ebb and Flow

'Ebb and Flow' is an old but favourite composition of mine. It depicts the ebb and flow of the sea around rocks and rock pools. Composed April 2010.

Figment

In August 2012, my friend Graham Dickson and I performed in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in our concert called 'Figments'. This piece 'Figment' was written specifically for Graham and depicts the idea of fragments of imagination of the mind. Poster: Amy Stevens.

Industry Suite

'The Engineer' was originally written  for a short animation by Amy Stevens in January 2012. Since then I have added three more percussion shorts, the most recent 'The Toy Maker' was composed in April 2013.

Soundtrack Excerpt from Haven

This is a short excerpt from the soundtrack of the indie game 'Haven' (created by William Taylor). Composed August 2012.
